Everyone knows that dogs have always been called man’s best friend. They will protect their humans even at the risk of losing their lives. Dogs are truly amazing creatures and a dog named Rex proved this by protecting one of his humans during a home invasion.

A 16-year-old teenager named Javier Mercado was home alone with Rex when a group of armed men broke into his home. Javier was in his room in his Des Moines home when he heard a noise outside the house. When he looked through the window to see what it was, he saw a car that was unfamiliar to him.

Soon after, Javier heard the sliding door downstairs, which was made of glass, shattering. At this point, Javier was scared for his life. Rex ran downstairs and all Javier heard was Rex barking and one of the intruders screaming and ordering the others to get the dog.

Javier hid in the closet and dialed 911. Rex ran back upstairs to Javier’s room. He was covered in blood and looked beat up. The burglars started to trash the bedrooms looking for valuables and when they made it to Javier’s room, Rex was there guarding Javier. Even with the little strength that Rex had left, he threw himself to attack the intruders. That was when Rex was shot four times.

The burglars were already long gone right when the police came. Javier came out of the closet and Rex was rushed to the animal hospital. Thankfully, Rex was still alive but he was horribly injured from the gunshots and needed surgery to save his life.

Although Javier and his family were thankful that Rex was alive, they were worried that they wouldn’t be able to afford Rex’s medical bills. However, when family, friends, and the local community heard about Rex’s story, they started a fundraiser to help raise money to pay for Rex’s medical bills.

Rex was regarded as a hero dog for his actions that day. Thanks to him, Javier was never found by the armed men who would have caused him harm. Rex recovered from his surgery and the fundraiser raised almost $60,000, which was more than enough to cover Rex’s medical bills. Javier’s family stated that the remaining money from the fundraiser will be donated to local organizations that help animals. Here’s a video telling Rex’s story about how he bravely fought intruders and protected his family, which nearly cost him his life.
