Nine-year-old Mason Burns from Carson City, Michigan has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. It is a genetic disorder that weakens the muscles quickly. About one in 3,600 boys get affected by this disease.

According to Tiffany Ryan, a teacher at Carson City Lower Elementary School, Maso is a sweet boy. He cares about his classmates a lot. However, Mason also worries that his teachers and classmates will get tired of helping and waiting for him always because of his disability. There are times that he will suddenly fall while walking in the hallway and he has to call someone to help him out.

Ms. Ryan could feel Mason’s difficulty in coping with school activities. She said that he needed a service dog that could help him with his daily tasks. The dog could also serve as his emotional support when he would feel depressed.

One service dog could cost about $12,000. Unfortunately, Mason’s family couldn’t afford to get him one. Ms. Ryan thought of something cool to help Mason and his family raise the needed amount for his service dog. She held a meeting with the student council so that they could do a fundraising activity for Mason’s service dog.

Together with the help of the media and the whole school population, Ms. Ryan was able to raise more than enough amount needed for Mason’s service dog! She was able to raise $13,288 for Mason! A check was given to Mason alongside his service dog, Spider! The remaining amount would be used for Spider’s training and certification.

Cher Car Kennels located in St. Johns, Michigan, would be taking care of Spider’s training and certification. Cher Car Kennels had been breeding and training German, Dutch, and Belgian Shepherds alongside Parson Jack Russel Terriers since 1977.

Mason and his family won’t forget the kindness the school has extended to their family. Thank you, Carson City Lower Elementary School, for your generosity!
