Winter is here

When winter comes, snow often comes with it. Some breeds of dogs are made to do well in the snow, but that’s not the case for every dog. Here are some ideas to help your dog who isn’t ready for the snow just yet.

Remember the temperature

Some breeds have thicker coats than others, and this is something you’ll want to keep in mind when it comes to taking your dog outside. If you have a dog that’s not necessarily made for snow, you may want to keep in mind that they’ll get cold too. To make sure they stay warm, try limiting their time outside or even giving your dog a sweater to wear outside.

Go slowly

Help your dog get used to the cold slowly. If you bring them out in freezing temperatures immediately, they’re not going to be fans of the cold. However, if you start with short amounts of time as it gets colder, and then allow them to stay out longer, they’ll be able to adjust to the cold temperatures.

One way you’ll know how your dog is doing while being outside is how they’re acting. If they’re trying to run back inside, or if they’re shaking, they’re probably too cold. If they seem like they’re okay, then they probably are and it is perfectly okay to keep them out for a longer period of time.

Bathroom spot

Since it’s going to be cold, you’ll want their bathroom time to be as quick as possible. Try to bring your dog to areas where they’ll be the most protected. You can also try having an area that you’ve already gotten ready for your dog to use; one way to do this is by clearing snow from a certain spot.

Be cautious

With snow, people will use things like rock salts to try and make the walkways more clear. These substances won’t be good for your dog to ingest. Watch your dog carefully while out in the snow to make sure they don’t try to eat something that could harm them.

Be prepared

Sometimes it’s simply too cold for your dog if they don’t have a thick coat of fur. To keep them warm outside, try using booties, coats, or other items to help. It can also be helpful to be prepared for when they come back inside with ways to get them warmed up quickly.

Winter is dry

When winter comes, it also brings dry skin for both us and our dogs, especially on their paws. You’ll want to try using something to moisturize your dog’s paws to keep them from cracking. You’ll also want to make sure they don’t lick off the lotion immediately; you could try covering their paws or giving them something to chew on.

Remember exercise

When it’s cold outside, you aren’t likely to be taking your dogs on walk as often which means they’re going to get less exercise. Make sure you’re doing other things to keep your dog active and healthy throughout the winter.
