Drew Smith wanted to adopt a dog so he went to an animal shelter in Bonita, California. He wanted to get a Golden Retriever, but then he saw a Spaniel-mix that somehow attracted his interest. He didn’t adopt him that day because the dog had dental issues that could cost thousands of dollars to get fixed.

But even when he was already at home, he still kept on thinking about the dog. Drew tossed and turned the whole night as he debated about the issue. The next day, he went back to the shelter and officially adopted him.

It was a decision that literally saved his life.

Carl

Drew loved his personality and their chemistry. The dog, which he named Carl, was a very low maintenance pet. He is usually calm and quiet which he says is a lot like him. In fact, for the first three weeks, Drew didn’t even hear the dog bark.

After three months, Carl found his voice.

On one particular January morning, Carl acted strangely the whole day. According to his dog walker,  the pooch was behaving unusually and he was hesitant about going back to the house after their exercise. He showed signs of apprehension and agitation when they were entering the apartment. Later that night, Drew took Carl out again for a walk and he did the same thing when they got back.

Drew disregarded his behavior and went to sleep. A few hours later, Carl woke him up. The dog was licking him and barking at the same time. He was also frantically running in and out of the room.

He wondered what got into his dog and then he smelled something. Drew went out of his room and he saw that his place was filled with smoke. He quickly grabbed Carl and they went out of the apartment building.

Thanks to Carl they were able to call the fire department right away and the damage was minimal. Apparently, the fire was burning inside the walls the whole day. No one could smell it but the dog.

He credits Carl for saving his life and said that this is the reason why people should always consider adopting a shelter dog.
