Like their human counterparts, military dogs face the same dangers every day on the battlefield. They selflessly serve to save human lives using their extraordinary skills. Sadly though, most of these highly-trained dogs don’t have happy endings when they retire.

U.S. veteran Byung Kang or BK realized this, and he promised that no matter what happens, he would give his K9 partner, Blue, a happy and comfortable life when they retire.

Bomb detecting dog

Blue and his 31-year-old handler served in Afghanistan together for several years. They went on over 300 combat missions side by side. Every day, the two, along with their squadron, would clear specific areas before the rest of the troops come in. They make sure that there are no bombs or explosives hidden in the area.

It is a very difficult and dangerous job, and they were the ones to do it. Blue has been highly trained to detect IEDs or Improvised Explosive Devices. His job is extremely essential as this meant saving the lives of the soldiers who are deployed there. Just one bomb going off could mean numerous lives lost.

Thankfully Blue is very good at his job, and no one was killed or injured when he was on the job.

Because of the highly stressful task given to them, BK and Blue developed a very strong bond. They needed to trust each other implicitly to survive. For many years, they have spent most of their time by each other’s side.

Promise fulfilled

When their second tour was up, BK returned home, but Blue was transferred somewhere else. He eventually lost track of his best friend. But he never forgot his promise.

BK’s wife, Wendy, also a former marine, knew how much the dog meant to her husband. So she made it her own personal mission to track him down. She did everything in her power to find Blue and bring him back to their home.

Thankfully, when Blue retired, they were able to adopt him and welcome the pooch to their home in Georgia. As promised, the former bomb-detecting dog is living a happy and relaxing life along with their other pets. And for his service, he was given the 2020 American Humane Hero Dog Award.
